Fremont High School Discussion Essay
While I might have complained about the lack of an AP class that I was interested in, I was again reminded of my luck when Mireya discussed her interest in simply wanting ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ to take an AP classâ⬠(Kozol 645). What was even more disturbing to picture was how the schoolââ¬â¢s lack of proper funding caused students to be pressured into enrolling in non-academic classes, such as sewing and hair-dressing II. Finally, the sadness in that classroom was brought to a climax when I could both see and feel the ââ¬Å"programingâ⬠within the studentsââ¬â¢ minds. When Mireya was talking about her reluctance to take the sewing class, a boy named Fortino said, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re ghettoâ⬠¦ so we send you o the factoryâ⬠¦ youââ¬â¢re ghetto ââ¬â so you sew! â⬠(Kozol 645). Even though he was probably speaking sarcastically out of his own frustrations, Fortinoââ¬â¢s words cut deep. I am aware that there are better and worse high schools out there than Fremont High School. And yet, reading Kozolââ¬â¢s account of the terrible conditions that are endured by these students made me feel more aware of the severity of improper or inadequate education that poorly funded schools provide. All of these problems, alongside my awareness of my fortunate years of education, make me wonder, just as Mireya did, as to why, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ [students] who need it so much more get so much less? â⬠(Kozol 648).

Video review Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Video review - Assignment Example Another thing that stood out for me in the video was the idea that we no longer need to select fonts anymore in the quest of trying to separate format from content. The video looks at Helvetica in a way that tries to explain how typeface affects our lives. I previously believed that san-serif type of font was related in some way to the old serif font that was used in the early twentieth century. It is amazing how the font represents an approach with no embellishments, no-nonsense font that simply shows figure of symbols, directly giving the message. The video confirmed that the use of san-serif saves some ink when used as opposed to old serifs. Now, I understand why, most often than not, Helvetica font has been used in utilitarian contexts. One thing that is still circling in my mind is how graphic design, typography, and global visual culture relate. This is issue is still unresolved because I still donââ¬â¢t clearly understand how typeface affects our lives. a. The first thing that stood out for me in this documentary is how it tries to trace the history of how the need of mass production came to exist. Especially, where it explains how the t Chinese armies needed their arrows standardized, and as such, mass production of the arrows. b. Secondly, the way the video looks at different designers from different countries irrespective of their status, whether eccentric showoffs or serious thinkers in the quest of trying to illustrate designerââ¬â¢s role really stood out for me in this video. c. The way the video tries to explain why things are or feel the way they are, from a toothbrush, potato peeler or a computer really stood out for me. For instance, the video explains that the invention and the design of the modern potato peeler was so as to help people with arthritis (Hustwit, Objectified). One feature regarding the role of designers in the design process is how they are expected to ensure that products are aesthetically pleasing, useful, easy to understand,

The Mythical Democratic- Republican National Convention (DRNC) Essay
The Mythical Democratic- Republican National Convention (DRNC) - Essay Example This essay stresses that the recommendations based on the risk analysis include that high security personnel should be deployed in the Bicentennial Park since it will be hosting over 20, 000 protestors who may be targets for a terrorist or bombing attack as well as to prevent them from becoming too violent and disrupting the meeting. The same security personnel with assistance from the security cameras should monitor the Hotel Row which will be housing the dignitaries and media personnel. Majority of the security parameters from the air surveillance to concrete barriers, bomb screening and experts to CCTV cameras and anti-terrorism forces should be present in the arena. There should also be set aside corridors and areas for mass evacuation and mass casualty treatment in case of any attack. The fire department should also be on the forefront with their evacuation skills to lend a hand in case of any risk. During the planning and resource allocation process, the planning committee and sub-committee should make considerations of the number of security forces need with different expertise from ground to air surveillance. This paper makes a conclusion that the combination of the threats, the vulnerabilities and the consequence of the threats happening have led to the identification and ranking of the risk factors and infrastructural assets that need to be considered during planning. The recommendations made are specific enough for the planning committee to consider in their budgetary allocations if curbing of the risks is to not only be effective but efficient as well.

Should we still talk about a digital divide Essay
Should we still talk about a digital divide - Essay Example The use of e-mails significantly enhanced information exchange in business, learning institutions as well as between individuals (Zittrain 2009). Initially the cost of internet connection, just like any innovative technology in the market cost a huge sum of money upon its commencement and availability in the market. According to research, by the year 2004, almost 50% of adults in America alone do not have access to internet technology, a situation that is attributed to financial constraints (Warschauer 2003). There after, the price of applying this technology has reduced tremendously allowing all economic classes to access information, other factors such as literacy and awareness held constant. With regards to the economic perspective, digital divide is a concept that is fading day by day especially in the developed countries. Mobile phones that have internet access are available in the market at reduced cost than they used to be, and people can communicate better using modern commun ication software such as Skype. According to Turban et al., (2011), Skype serves an average of 25 million clients during peak hours. It has been significant in the lifestyles of the modern society. The most important aspect has been lowering the cost of telephone services. Subscribers of Skype are able to communicate effectively through unlimited phone calls, which is not possible through the common telephone service providers. Moreover, Skype services are accessible globally and therefore every person who has access to the internet can use them (Booth, 2010). Owen et al. (2006) observes that in the developed economies, people have an opportunity of choosing what kind of communication to use rather than where... According to the research findings there are various theories that have been applied to explain the concept of digital divide. These lead to three categories of digital divides including; the economic divide, usability divide and empowerment divide. To begin with, the theory of economic divide is focused on the affordability of information systems and equipment such as computers and telephone. During the inception of Information Technology in the society, the acquisition of computers by individuals required large amounts of money. This limited information flow to a small group of wealthy people who could afford a personal computer. The digital divide was large on a global perspective. The rate of adoption of ICT was also different among global economies. The complexity of emerging technology has locked out many people from accessing and utilizing information. This limitation goes beyond economic aspects with regards to the existence of a digital divide. Most of the less developed cou ntries are still struggling to accomplish the objectives of primary education. Computer literacy is considered to be tertiary level and hence little or no resources are budgeted for it. Empowerment is the practice of augmenting the religious, political, societal, racial, gender and ethnic strength of individuals and groups of people to acquire the confidence needed to accomplish a particular goal. The empowered develop confidence in their competences.

Dialect and indexicality in Wuthering Heights And Mary Barton Essay
Dialect and indexicality in Wuthering Heights And Mary Barton - Essay Example It informs about the methods that are employed in comprehending language and communication as a whole. Wuthering Heights and Mary Barton employ different varieties of dialects as Wuthering Heights has usage of Yorkshire dialect while Mary Barton uses Lancashire dialect. The usage of dialects in both the literary works is crucial as the authors mouthed the dialects to certain characters belonging to lower classes of society. The authors by the usage of dialects gave the literary works a touch of originality as real time characters using common dialects were employed for speaking the dialects. In Wuthering Heights, Josephââ¬â¢s character is mentionable in using Yorkshire dialect while in Mary Barton, Jane Wilsonââ¬â¢s character is mentionable in using Lancashire dialect. This paper will focus on Josephââ¬â¢s character in Wuthering Heights and Jane Wilsonââ¬â¢s character in Mary Barton in terms of their acquisition and usage of Yorkshire and Lancashire dialects respectively. Joseph is portrayed as a pious character who makes use of religion in his day to day life. Being a servant at Wuthering Heights, he is not like other servants and dislikes to work. His personality is not liked by other characters of the literary work because most of the time, he uses cursing and threatening language for delivering his points. His language is not easily comprehensible because of his coarse and raw Yorkshire dialect. His accent is also thick and difficult to interpret, which causes his language to appear more complicated. Joseph does not lead a sympathetic or concerned life and is mostly inconsiderate and believes in his own righteousness. He makes stringent verdicts about peopleââ¬â¢s going to hell and believes in the supernatural. However, Joseph is sympathetic towards Hareton considering him the future head of the family at Wuthering Heights (Wiltshire 2005, pp. 23-24). Joseph talks about Hareton as 'Thearl' he eiaculated. 'Hareton, thah willn't sup thy porridg e tuh neeght; they'll be nowt bud lumps as big as maw nave. Thear, agean! Aw'd fling in bowl un' all, if Aw wer yah! Thear, pale t'guilp off, un' then yah'll hae done wi't. Bang, bang. It's a marcy t'bothom isn't deaved aht!' (Bronte 2001, p. 172). Considering Hareton of some importance, Joseph employs the words of ââ¬Å"thahâ⬠and ââ¬Å"thyâ⬠also because he feels some affection for the child. Yorkshire dialect has been used excellently by Emily Bronte in her work Wuthering Heights. Her usage of the dialect represents the dialect used in the region. Josephââ¬â¢s dialect is quite difficult to understand as it is exactly the same dialect spoken in the Yorkshire region. The usage of the dialect by Emily Bronte brought much criticism because of incomprehensibility of her used dialect. Her written dialect and Josephââ¬â¢s speeches were somewhat changed by Charlotte Bronte, but because of her sameness of dialect to Yorkshire region, her work was kept as such because of the originality of her work. She portrayed Joseph as a coarse and rough character whose language and manners spoke of his coarseness and roughness (Heywood 1987, p. 186). Using of dialect as it is, is a sensitive matter, however, the understanding of a character depends on his used language and style. Joseph as a character of servitude does not appear ridiculous when he uses Yorkshire dialect. We are able to know him and his class by the usage of his language. His character adds to our interpretation of

Choose a topic for the Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Choose a topic for the Paper - Essay Example The causes for the great depression are many and complex but the basic reasons for the great depression can be listed as a stock market which crashed, economic trends which were negative and a lack of investments in large projects. Industries such as heavy machinery production, shipbuilding and mining operations were worst hit and they had to let go of thousands of workers who could not find jobs to replace the ones they had lost (Wheeler, 2007). Amongst the after effects of the Great Depression was the New Deal which was offered by Roosevelt to the Americans which gave fair wages for fair work. A forty hour work week was created to make sure that positions could be given to all those who wanted to work and massive deficit spending was undertaken by the government to give the economy a boost. In fact, the current transport network which crisscrosses across America is one of the projects which was started to get America out of its economically stagnant state (Higgs, 1992). The Great Depression, even though it was a sad period for those who went through it brought many advantages for those who came after the period since the decisions made then have kept the American economy stable for decades. For example, the idea of a minimum wage comes from the aftermath of the great depression and the benefits to the southern half of the American states were immense since the economic focus shifted from agriculture to industrialization and services (Parker, 2007). I feel that Americans lost trust in financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies in the years which followed the great depression and came to depend more on the relationship they had with the government. Franklin Roosevelt probably benefited most from the era since he was able to pull America out of the situation and was (and still is) seen as a hero for the nation. His New Deal worked for a lot

Rivalry against Mr.Empanada Restaurant Research Paper
Rivalry against Mr.Empanada Restaurant - Research Paper Example Empanada was well on the way to being a recognized fast food company in the Tampa Bay area (Mr. Empanada). Mr. Empanada served as a vendor in the forum of the Tampa Bay Times. The most recent franchise of Mr. Empanada was established in the Soviet Union in St. Petersburg in September 2012 (Mr. Empanada). To preserve the quality of its products, Mr. Empanada only produces its food stuffs in one location in Armenia Avenue. There are many restaurant chains that sell empanadas in the United States; but Mr. Empanada is the only restaurant that specializes in creating different types of empanadas. It is also the only restaurant that operates in the Southeast. Empanadas, as well as other similar specialty food offerings are a niche market with potential for greater development. Empanadas are quite cost effective yet bring considerable proceeds to the restaurant. In addition, the low cost of the ingredients used to create empanadas along with the wide range of flavors that can be used has be en made Mr. Empanada a great success. Macro environment factors refer to external factors that affect a company but that are beyond a companyââ¬â¢s capacity to control. A model that addresses external factors that affect firms is the Porterââ¬â¢s Five Forces Model. ... g power of suppliers (d) Rivalry among business competitors (e) The threat of substitute products (Kerfoot, Davies, and Ward 115) Diagram of Porterââ¬â¢s Five Forces Analysis (Porter, 89) Competitive rivalry concerns one of the most important aspects for industries, as it may be used to decide on potential marketing or operating strategies that will ensure that the organizations stays ahead of the competition. Mr. Empanadaââ¬â¢s marketing strategies are largely based on factors that take into account its competitors. The restaurantââ¬â¢s consumers naturally have high standards and will opt for the outlet that caters best for their needs. This explains why Mr. Empanada is constantly looking to create new and more flavor filled products that are created with organic raw materials. Rivalry in the restaurant industry is evident in the price discounting practices, advertising campaigns, service improvement initiatives, and new product introductions that are often seen in many res taurants. Moreover, sometimes, intense competition can negatively affect profitability. Many times, the intensity of business rivalry is brought about by the following factors: Exit Barriers ââ¬â Competition between businesses usually increases when the expenses involved in closing the business are more than the costs involved in remaining in business. The expression ââ¬Ëexit barrierââ¬â¢ is descriptive of an impediment that makes it difficult for an entrepreneur to leave the business. These barriers mean that the entrepreneur will incur a great cost in spite of having good reasons for leaving. Exit barriers can exacerbate business rivalry because if a corporation is not able to leave due to underperformance, it is forced to compete. In the restaurant industry, there is a low exit rate and there are not many
